Care to animals
The dogs and other pet animals deserve good moral consideration. They do have a moral claim on its owners. Most of the owners think like that even if they will get embarrassment in admitting that they kiss their dogs. People are used to treat their pet animals differently. We have set a moral distinction between them and us for our convenience. There are no such criteria which will sort the human and animals in separate categories. Species membership can be a criteria but it will not make them not getting any moral consideration. Many of the people may claim that the humans have soul which can be viewed as a criterion. This will only need the animals the get serious moral consideration.
Owing the moral consideration to the animals will have certain conditions. The animals with sentience, which is the capability to feel pain and pleasure, can be a fine candidate. Some of the species may be not sentiment. But this doesn’t mean that they don’t need any consideration. Actually there is no way principled to classify the humans into a moral category and all other animals into another. This can create a moral dilemma. Still the moral sympathy of our people has not gone beyond the small kinship groups. But there is a change in the moral sympathies of the people. We should realize that we are treating animals badly and must try to do better or, even at least, we should try to be consistent. If we are not giving any moral consideration to the termites, we should not give a hyped moral status to the human embryos also.
Neglecting the drowning kittens is just like aborting late-staged fetuses. The people are used to treating humans and non human animals differently in a great number of ways which cannot be morally justified. They are used to spending a lot of time in just formulating some ethical theory to justify the immoral practices towards the animals but what we should actually do is that we should admit our short comings and act accordingly. Determining what to do will not be difficult but the hardest part will be implementing that. |
